CHAPTER 5

Locking the bakery doors, Libby retreated to her car, grateful, at least, for tonight, that Cecily wasn’t around. She’d hovered mercilessly since she and Eric broke up – if you could call it that. Since they weren’t technically together, also technically, they couldn’t really break up, but she didn’t know what else to call it. Cecily had wanted details, but she’d never provided them, which had put an awkward wedge between them for the very first time.

Exhaling loudly, Libby tried to drown out her worries with loud pop music. It worked until she walked in her front door. There, the quiet and a dozen images of Eric crowded her brain. Eric, the first time he’d come in, looking so handsome. Eric, rolling his eyes and proclaiming her the “queen” of cupcakes. Eric, his arm around her shoulders while they watched a romantic movie. Eric, saying he didn’t care what size she was.

“You’re an idiot,” she said aloud. Instead of being flattered by the remark, she’d gotten upset. Who did that?

She sauntered forward, tossing her car keys on the counter. Opening the freezer, she dug out a frozen dinner and popped it into the microwave. The appliance’s steady whir filled the atmosphere. The trio of beeps at the end of the cooking cycle coincided with the ringing of her phone. She stared at the number, not recognizing it, and put on her bubbly voice. “Libby Unick.”

“Miss Unick, this is Elvira Woodcock. I’m Eric Spader’s neighbor.”

Libby leaned against the counter. His neighbor had called her?

“I hate to do this,” the woman continued, “but I’ve had an emergency.”

“I’m sorry. Ms. ... Woodcock, is it?” Libby searched her memory for the woman’s name.

“Call me Elvira.”

“Elvira ... But what did you need me for?”

Elvira cleared her throat. “Oh ... Yes, I need to explain. He’s left his dog, Sherlock, with me. He said his father was ill, and he needed to fly home. Ordinarily, it wouldn’t be a problem, but my son was in a car accident in Cincinnati, and I really must go be with him.”

The fact Eric wasn’t in town, and she hadn’t known struck her hard. Her answer faltered. “Of ... of course.”

“He gave me your name a while back, said if there was ever an issue with the dog ...” Elvira paused. “I hope it’s not a problem.”

Was it a problem? Libby trembled and tossed her head to rid herself of the jittery feeling. It shouldn’t be. Stupid, for her to be nervous over taking care of a dog. She couldn’t very well abandon the animal. “No, it’s no problem. Do you need me to pick him up?”

“Would you? It’d be such a help, and I’m so sorry for tossing him aside like this. I assume you know the way. We’re on Orange Hills Avenue.”

“I’m familiar with it ... and it’s okay. Sherlock and I are old friends.”

Libby realized, once in her car, that Eric had always come over to her place and not the other way around. For some reason, this made the twelve minute drive nerve-wracking.
